20 Children with incurable illnesses get Medals
Shelly B. Bydlinski is the coordinater for the Georgia Chapter and has worked with the Golden Isles Track Club members to gather medals. On May 21st, Shelly made the first ever Georgia presentation of medals at Egleston Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. "They're in a marathon for their lives," said Shelly. "The Children felt as if they had won the medals themselves and wore them proudly."
Medals4Mettle (M4M) is a non-profit organization founded in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 2005. Its mission is to celebrate and reward the individual and collective courage of all human beings by facilitating the gifting of marathon finisher’s medals from marathoners to people who have demonstrated similar mettle, or courage. The recipients can be any age and might have exhibited such mettle by dealing with disease, handicaps or any similar challenge. Runners give their medals to Medals4Mettle then M4M's nationwide network of physicians and others award these medals to those who might not be able to run a marathon, but are in their own marathon to continue to live their life.Medals from the Disney Marathon and the Boston Marathon were presented alongside surfing medals and sand-dollar shaped medals from a Tybee Island Marathon. All were donated by runners who wanted to pass on their awards to those with similar courage and fight in them. The children had about 80 medals from which to choose. Children too ill to attend will also have their choice of medals. "They loved wearing them," said Bydlinski, "Thye got to pick teh one that caught their eye."
